Senator in 'fake online campaign'

Ron Paul's online campaign may be fake
Receiving thousands of hits
Suspected of being an astroturfing campaign

A CANDIDATE for the US presidency is being buoyed by a huge online campaign that may be a fake a grassroots movement organised by party staff.

YouTube footage of Texan Republican Senator Ron Paul, whose candidacy has been overshadowed in the media by competitors Rudi Giuliani, Fred Thompson and John McCain, has been viewed by tens of thousands of people in the last week.

As of 11am AEST today, a compilation of different clips of Senator Paul was the top rated video of the past 24 hours.

The clip had been viewed nearly 60,000 times since it was uploaded yesterday

But it was not the only clip of the senator receiving kudos from YouTube users, with another 10 videos appearing in today’s list of the site’s 100 top rated recordings.

Of the 11 featured clips of Senator Paul, only one user uploaded more than one of them in the last 24 hours.

Head of Flinders University’s Department of American Studies Don De Bots told NEWS.com.au that it “sounded like” an astroturfing campaign.

Astroturfing is the term used to describe a fake grassroots campaign, in which members of an organisation create the illusion that “ordinary people” are behind the movement.

Professor De Bots said that for a relatively unknown candidate like Senator Paul to have so much prominence online was suspicious.

“I would not put any credibility on those results,” Prof De Bots said.

“I find it terrifically surprising and unlikely (that Senator Paul would attract that level of response).”

Earlier this week, the senator’s campaign team issued a press release that said: “Dr Paul's video channel has been viewed 4.5 million times by supporters who embrace his message of freedom and limited government, making him one of the most-watched presidential candidates in internet history.”

Those figures were based only on clips uploaded by one user, RonPaul2008dotcom, who didn’t have any clips in today’s 100 top rated list.

anyway. I'll wager 1-9 its a Murdoch owned affiliate. Should be a FOX NEWS Alert, " missing campaigners in Ron Paul camp. Greta where are you?

FREDom is popular! How could this so called "stunt" possibly hurt? There is nothing but a 100% fact written in that press release by I LOVE HANNITY...

Any Fred deniers deserve to be locked up in GITMO, with all the rest of the liberal hippie terrorist!

I think we need to DOUBLE GITMO, so we have enough room for all the subverter's. Like Fred Thompson said; "Dissent makes us weak" and we can't have that right now in a time of WAR.

We can't afford to have these hippie liberals undermine our national security because they want their "Rights."

That's not gonna happen.

Protection and Security is what's needed here in the US of A.

GO FRED!

WOW... I'm stunned that you could even pull this off.

All I have to say is this, Ron Paul's internet presence it real, and so is his grassroots support.

I guess the Ron Paul campaign is starting to heat up, and the establishment running scared if they are able to get this un-researched, totally biased, crap hit piece to run in the media.

You people are really demented. Your idiocy will definitely be revealed, and if your candidate can't win legitimately, he doesn't deserve to win (and probably won't). You whackjobs need to get a life...sounds like it's some sort of Nazi pep rally in here. You all claim to be real, die-hard patriotic Americans, but you're really quite the opposite...especially if you want a North American Union.

WAKE UP!
